England rescued a draw on the final day at Eden Park, with Matt Prior's unbeaten 110 saving grace as the Kiwis could not get the required final wicket for victory.

"It's heartbreaking, obviously," said McCullum. "We played some brilliant cricket throughout the series, but especially in this Test match, and dictated the terms from the first day and gave us every opportunity to force the result."

The New Zealand captain managed to put aside his disappointment evident and admitted he was pleased with his team. . "We tried everything, but came up short was just a wonderful Test match," McCullum said before adding: "We are certainly a trend in the right direction - which is very nice."

England completed what was obviously disappointing series in New Zealand. The team was not at full capacity with Graeme Swann and Tim Bresnan recovering from elbow injuries. Pietersen was also sidelined for the final exam with a knee complaint.

Cook reflected on the series in general and found some positive themes on which to focus. England captain praised his bowling performance in the second test match, and described it as a standout in the series.

"I think he was outstanding in the first innings to bowl New Zealand out for 250. Such wicket, which was a great effort," said Cook.

"The boys were back to their best, put New Zealand under pressure and not let them get away from us.That is one of our hallmarks.

"Although Jimmy did not get the wickets, he bowled 30 overs in the wind, more or less - an exceptional effort Broady was great to see back in the windows, and bowling, and I think he's done.".

Cook was understandably concerned about the adequacy of Pietersen, especially with the Champions Trophy and ash on the horizon for England. I choose to remain positive when talking about the seriousness of the injury Pietersen.

Cook said: "If the injury is not as bad as expected, and is only a little rest and then did not need surgery on the positive side it gets a little free time and is ready to go for the ashes."

The English captain was confident in what the future of the team and was already thinking about the series back to New Zealand to be held in England during the month of May.

Cook said: "Come the first Test against New Zealand, who wants a fully fit team that does not always happen, and when it does not have to have the strength in depth -.'s Why we think" you're in a pretty healthy position English as a team, we can call very good players to come in. "
